Contract vs Full-Time Engineering Hire

Both put an engineer to work. Picking the wrong one costs you either a contractor with no long-term ownership stake, or a permanent hire for a project that ends in three months.

The core distinction

Contract

Speed and flexibility for defined work

Faster to bring on, easier to scale down, well suited to a defined project, a capacity gap, or specialized short-term expertise where long-term ownership isn't the point.

Full-Time

Ownership for the long term

Slower by design, built to evaluate long-term technical and culture fit for a role someone will own for years, not months. The right choice when the work is ongoing, not project-bound.

Which one you actually need

Contract answers 'who can solve this specific problem now.' Full-time answers 'who should still be here in three years, owning this system as it grows.' Confusing the two is how companies end up either overpaying a contractor for ownership work, or burning a permanent hire on a project that was never going to last.
